  not too long ago i read a news story on this forum about deaths due to medical errors in australian hospitals.

  i think it had something to do with statistics generated by some minister in a department of health in australia.

  part of the article cited numbers of deaths (or errors) due to blood transfusions and a conclusion that transfusions were given more often then medically necessary.

  Thanks, but, believe me, I tried online searches with the likes of Yahoo, Google and the rest. Those two searches you linked to do not give me what I am looking for.

  What I read was a news article that quoted a source about the number of deaths in Australian hospitals related to errors. Part of the summary had to do with the unnecessary administering of blood transfusion. I need to find that news article again.

  By the way, has anyone read the latest about a JW father okaying a blood transfusion for his daughter after re-examining scriptural tenets? I wonder how he will be treated now?

  Usually I stay away from these things, but you hit this one square and I just had to commend it.

  Adults ignore children and morons who hurl personal insults instead of sound replies. Children grow up; morons eventually leave from frustration (with bottom lip poked out!). Adults stay the course and continue with sane living.

  Adults too realize discussion boards like this are little more than tools. At best you get out what you put in. At worst you forget them and find another tool, one that is not worn out or broken.

  The apostates are really making an issue out of child molestation.

  There is no way anyone here can conclude if this man, Cruz, is innocent of the charges brought against him. We know that a jury did not hear enough to convince them of his guilt. At least authorities were notified of the allegations and had an opportunity to investigate the matter. Unless there was mishandling by the police and/or prosecutors, in this case society had the fullest protection of law working in its favor. Who can ask for more?

  I believe people who act as you describe in online settings are either, stupid, ignorant, frustrated or else just plain ole egotistical fools, which means they’re frustrated ignoramuses, which means they’re stupid.

  There is no sound, or moral, reason for walking away from giving an insult without defending it or else apologizing. A person might complain they feel as though they were talking to an imbecile, and therefore applied some insult out of frustration. But if a person really is an imbecile then intelligence dictates just walking away at the point of realization. Why waste time insulting an asshole in the first place? I mean, how much character damage can you do to an asshole? On the other hand, even assholes have feelings, and intelligent people tend to avoid inflicting needless emotional hurt.

  By the way, if you are the same Seeker that use to converse with Friend then I have a private message for you. It appears you have been on this forum for quite awhile, but somehow that escaped my notice until now. Otherwise I would have tried contacting you earlier. I will explain in private email.   Registration papers filed with the United Nations at that time contained no statements that conflicted with our Christian beliefs.

  I suggest writing back and asking for copies of the original registration papers in order to verify the veracity of this claim. In addition I suggest asking for all other correspondence between the WTS and the United Nations Department of Public Information. These additional documents should support the veracity of the initial claim, assuming it is true.

  However, when it was recently brought to our attention what was expected of an NGO registered with DPI, we withdrew our registration so as to remove any implication that our being recognized by the United Nations as an NGO goes beyond our original purpose or that Jehovah’s Witnesses are involved in activities that are inconsistent with our own teachings.

  “Recently brought to our attention” implies that over the ten (10!) year period of registered status there were no document swaps between the WTS and the UN drawing attention to what was expected of NGOs that might conflict with WTS teachings. Again, there is an easy way to demonstrate the veracity of the implication—ask for copies.

  Can anyone think of a good reason the WTS would resist providing these documents on request?

  1975 Made Easy.

  as i was one of those people who were around during the build-up to 1975, i thought that some of the newer converts might be interested to see how the society arrived at this date with such confidence.. firstly, we need to see how 1914 figures in this.

  we need to appreciate, that although the date 1914 is arrived at retrospectively - that is it was assumed initially to be the date of armageddon, only later was it re-written as the date when satan was thrown out of heaven and jesus ascended to his throne.. the society tied this in with the scripture this generation will by no means pass away until all these things occur, assumed that a generation was the average life-span of 70 years, tacked it onto 1914 to arrive at 1984 but also mentioned that some would live to 80 years owing to special strength, then mentioned that this generation would by no means pass away so that quite a wide time slot was available for armageddon to arrive.

  this window of time then provided endless opportunities for jws to be kept in a permanent state of anticipation as various events unfolded.

  Looking back on the 1975 idiocy (I was a pioneer at the time) the one point that always makes me shake my head is the assumption that a creative day was 7000 years long. Without this assumption there would be no significance to 1975, yet there is no basis other than pure speculation for making this assumption!

  Instead of instigating any significance to 1975, I think the 7,000-year creative days idea actually resulted from it.

  It works like this:

  1. The WTS calculated we are roughly 6,000 years into the 7th "rest day," which brings us to at or around 1975.

  2. The WTS has taught/assumed that Christ's 1,000-year reign as king in a special government (called God's Kingdom) will be the final 1,000 years of the 7th "rest day."

  3. The WTS has taught/assumed we stand at the threshold of the 1,000-year reign of Christ.

  4. The close proximity of the 6,000-year and 1,000-year periods is too close to be coincidental, therefore the WTS assumes the two must be related as God's final "rest day" from creation.

  Concluding that 1975 marked the end of 6,000 years of human history birthed the 7,000-year creative day teaching.

  1975 became significant because it coincidentally fell at a millennial marker. That's it in a nutshell. If that marker had been 12,000 years the WTS would have taught the creative days were 13,000 years.
